The aim of this project is to investigate the changes occurred in the Mediterranean economy from the mid 3rd c. BC until the 9 c. AD with a particular focus on the Roman south Etruria. Drawing from the results of the Alberese Archaeological Project , this research aims to analyze the tight relationship between economy and riverine connectivity through the archaeological investigation of a series of Roman to Early Medieval sites along the flow of the river Ombrone. Its scientific approach is multidisciplinary, combining archaeology with landscape and environmental analysis, bioarchaeology, petrography, the study of written sources and historical maps and analysis of the material culture.
