The IMPERO project’s team made my introduction to archeology much more than just an educational experience. Not for the faint of heart, this experience will give you an introduction to every aspect of an archeological dig. From proper tool use, documentation, and collaboration with people from all over the world, this trip immerses you in everything archeology. Even though most of our time was spent digging, there were plenty of other little adventures we went on over the weekend and sometimes in the evenings after work. Our weekend trips to other archeological sites, museums, and restaurants allowed us to see Italy’s hidden wonders. Because we were not in a very touristy area, we were constantly immersed in a foreign culture, learning new things about how people in Italy truly live. It was strange at first, but I grew to love the nuances of the Italian lifestyle. However, the greatest part of the experience was the people who were on it. Many of the members of our team have been a part of this dig for many years. Their expertise is what allowed us, archeology rookies, to learn so much in such a short amount of time. Due to the extended time spent together, we grew extremely close in just three short weeks. I am looking forward to seeing them again soon, hopefully, while we are all covered in dirt.
